Area information

Bardonecchia is 1312 meters heigh and is placed in a big valley at the centre of four alpine valleys: is in the middle of a great mountain arena (many over 3000 meters, with a peak of 3505m.) with many streams runs down from the valleys.
The old inabited centre of Bardonecchia is called Borgo Vecchio, and is placed aruound St. Ippolito parish church. Great restructure works have been done in Borgo Vecchio. Recently, many streets have been cover with stone pavements, the pubblic lightning and urban tools are anew. The parish is devoted to St. Ippolito and St. Giorgio (the patronal fesat of St. Ippolito is August, 13) In the church the altar you can admire the chor of the XV sec., the fuontain for baptizing and some woodcrafts. The church has two bell towers: one built in the 19th cenutury (that has been built when the church has been completely restored) while on the left the old romanic tower still survives. In the same square of the Church thesre is the Town Museum: in the etnografic departement there are many important pieces related to the history of the palce with tools, fourniture and religious items. Visiting it you can have and idea of peasant's life before the developing of mass tourism.

Of Borgo Vecchio, On the walls of some houses of Borgo Vecchio you can see some meridians. Up the village are the remains of a tower, the Tour d'Aumont, which beloged to the old castle of the lords of Bardonecchia of the 15th century. The small village of Les Arnauds can be esaly reched walking out from Borgo Vecchio: you must take the path from the bridge of Tre Croci. From the centre you can reach the Rho and Frejus Valleys, the typical houses, the small Chaffaux and Vernet boroughs and the fascinating alpine landscape. You can walk ride a muntain bike or a horse through the Rho and Frejus passes and reach the French towun of Modane.

Via Medail in the centre of Bardonecchia is connected to Borgo Nuovo ( a part of the town built in the 19th century when the Frejus tunnel was built). Via Medail is called so after the man who projecte the Frejus tunnel and is the the touristic centre of Bardonechia: there you can find shops, supermarkets, tea rooms, bars and restaurants on both the sides of the street always crowded with tourists where the traffic is limited. It is the ideal site for shopping both in winter and summer.

In this area, too, there are plenty of shops, restaurants, coffee bars and other meeting places. Every saturday morning there is a big market. Not more than 200 meters away there is the starting of the Frejus tunnel. You can also reach easily the small villages of Rochemolles and Millaures. Near the railway station there is the tourismus office. The sports centre is close to the railway station, too. Nearby are Campo Smith (site of the ski schools), swimming pools, football fields and the Palazzo delle Feste where events are organized continuously.

Tourists information

To reach Bardonecchia by car you can choose between:
· Motorway A-32 Torino-Bardonecchia-Frejus: take the Bardonecchia’s exit, just before Frejus tunnel.
· Arterial road SS 24 of Monginevro.

To reach Bardonecchia by train, take the railway line Torino-Bussoleno-Bardonecchia and get off at Bardonecchia railway station (Torino Porta Nuova: trip time 1.40 h. One train every 2 hours).

If you arrive by PLANE at Torino airport (Caselle), continue toward Torino in the By-Pass road, than take the motorway A-32 Torino-Bardonecchia-Frejus or the Arterial Road SS 24 of Monginevro. From Caselle Airport is possible arrive to Torino (at railway station: Porta Nuova/Porta Susa) with Sadem Bus also, 1 every 40 min or so.
